Original grantee
John Marie Durst was a Nacogdoches merchant, interpreter, soldier, and Mexican Texas legislator whose life ran through the Old Stone Fort and the politics of East Texas. In April 1834 he received a Mexican land grant of five leagues in Houston, Nacogdoches, and Anderson counties, then moved to his San Patricio grant on the Angelina River and laid out Mount Sterling. During the revolution, Durst warned Texans of Santa Anna's movement and commanded local forces. His survey is a strong example of a Mexican-era grant later carried into Republic and county title.
